christmas-carol-posterThis holiday season seems like it will be a good one for movies.  There’s quite a few coming out that seem like they’ll be pretty good.  One in particular I’m interested in is the new Jim Carrey movie, “A Christmas Carol”.  It opens Friday, November 6th, and officially kicks off the holiday movie season.

From what I’ve read, it’s supposed to be a fairly faithful adaptation of the Charles Dickens book.  For those that don’t know, and seriously who doesn’t know this story, here’s a brief synopsis:

Basically, Ebenezer Scrooge is an old, rich, penny pincher that cares more for his money than for people.   On Christmas eve his old (and dead) business partner, Jacob Marley visits him to tell him that if he doesn’t change his life, he will bear large iron chains foe eternity.  Also 3 ghosts (past, present, future) will visit him and show him what his life has become.  The ghosts visit, and show Scrooge his life, and how he has hurt those around him.  The future ghosts shows him the future will be horrible, and that Tiny Tim will die if he doesn’t change.  Scrooge wakes to find it is Christmas morning, and that there is time for him to change and become a new man.  God bless us, everyone.  The End.

I’m actually looking forward to this movie, even though I’m not really a huge fan of the original story.  In fact, in my opinion, Scrooged was the definitive take on “A Christmas Carol”.  However, because I love holiday themed movies, and I like Jim Carrey, I am planning on seeing this one.

As a side note, let me just say that if you haven’t seen “Scrooged”, then you owe it to yourself to go out and rent that scroogedthing  right away.  It’s funny, and kind of spooky, and heartwarming.  The soundtrack by Danny Elfman alone is worth watching it for.

The trailer for the film is pretty good, and it looks like an interesting animation style was used.  It’s being released in digital 3d, which I’m actually a fan of.  I was never partial to the old red/blue 3d movies, but the digital 3d (when done properly) is really something.  I took my son to see UP in 3d this year, and I liked the way the 3d was used in subtle ways to add depth or to enhance action.  I’m hoping that “A Christmas Carol” will be the same.  I’d love to go see this in IMAX, but unfortunately the closest IMAX theater to where I live is about 2 hours away.  Once I head out to see it with the wife I’ll throw a quick post up of my thoughts and impressions of it, because I know that everyone just can’t wait.   Well, until next time….
